The United Arab Emirates has authorised Starlink Satellite Communications Services to provide broadband satellite internet services nationwide under a 10-year Public Space Services Licence issued by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA).

The licence permits Starlink to provide satellite internet connectivity to individuals, businesses and government entities across the UAE. It also covers users in the maritime and aviation sectors.

The approval adds satellite broadband to the country’s available connectivity options and forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the UAE’s digital infrastructure.

TDRA Director General, Eng. Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, said Starlink’s licensing demonstrates the UAE’s focus on embracing advanced technologies while maintaining a regulatory framework that encourages innovation and investment.

Al Mesmar said the development would expand the choices available to connectivity users and further support the UAE’s standing as a regional and global hub for telecommunications and the digital economy.

According to the authority, the licence is expected to increase diversity within the UAE’s telecommunications networks and improve the resilience of its digital infrastructure. Satellite broadband will provide another means of accessing connectivity for users across multiple sectors, particularly in locations where conventional terrestrial networks may be less practical.

The licensing agreement also reflects the UAE’s ongoing efforts to develop regulations that can accommodate emerging technologies while facilitating the growth of advanced digital services.

Under the 10-year licence, Starlink can expand its satellite broadband operations in the UAE and serve residential, commercial and government customers, alongside users in the maritime and aviation sectors.

The development adds to the UAE’s efforts to establish itself as a global centre for telecommunications, technology and the digital economy.
