Applications are now open for the Sahara CodeSwitch Africa Challenge 2026, an innovation competition designed for developers, researchers, startups, students and other builders working on real-world voice AI solutions for Africa.

Organised by Intron, the challenge focuses on improving speech technology’s ability to understand African accents, local languages and code-switching — the practice of switching between two or more languages during a conversation.

The competition offers a US$10,000 total cash prize pool, with top-performing teams set to receive cash awards across the various competition categories.

Beyond the financial prizes, participants could also secure Partner Demo Day opportunities, increased visibility among sponsors, judges, funders and ecosystem partners, potential pilot and deployment opportunities, additional Sahara API credits, as well as technical feedback and recognition.

The challenge is open to builders across Africa and the African diaspora. Applicants may participate individually or as part of a team.

Eligible participants include developers and engineers, artificial intelligence and machine learning researchers, startups and product teams, university student teams, open-source builders, NGOs and civic-tech teams, as well as companies operating voice or customer-facing workflows.

While individual applications are accepted, teams of two to five people are recommended.

Participants are expected to develop or improve a real-world voice AI application. The proposed technology must use voice to perform or support a downstream task, meaning entries should go beyond simply converting speech into text.

Potential applications include voice assistants, healthcare and patient-support tools, voice-driven forms, agricultural advisory services, educational and tutoring platforms, customer-service solutions, financial and payment applications, and legal or public-service tools.

Entrants will also be required to benchmark their solutions using code-switched audio, comparing their performance through the Sahara API and other speech models.

The competition has five major categories: Health; Legal and Public Services; Fintech, Telco and Customer Experience; Agriculture and Education; and Other High-Impact Use Cases. The final category covers areas including accessibility, media, commerce, transport and culture.

Applicants should be prepared to describe the problem and proposed solution, a working prototype or integrated application, a short video demonstration, code or technical documentation, benchmark results comparing speech models, and a note covering privacy, consent, safety and responsible AI use.

The benchmark must assess performance across at least three speech models, one of which must be an Intron Sahara API.

Entries will be evaluated according to real-world impact, code-switching performance, product quality and usability, technical execution, and ethics and safety. Solutions tackling meaningful problems affecting a significant number of people may receive additional consideration.

The registration window runs from August 5 to September 15, 2026, while the build period is scheduled for August 15 to September 15, 2026. The final submission deadline is September 15, 2026.

Finalists are expected to be announced on September 25, 2026, with the winners announced on October 1, 2026.

For African developers and innovators working in AI, machine learning, speech technology or multilingual applications, the competition provides an opportunity to develop technology around a practical challenge affecting communities across the continent.
