Google offers African students 12 months of free AI Plus access

University and college students in Nigeria and 26 other African countries can access Google AI Plus free for 12 months under a student offer designed to support academic learning, research and exam preparation.

The offer provides eligible students with access to Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence tools, increased usage limits, cloud storage and study features that can help them manage coursework and understand complex subjects.

Google expanded the offer to 27 African countries in August 2026. Students can use the tools to analyse lecture notes, create practice quizzes, explore challenging concepts through interactive visualisations and organise academic materials.

The subscription is available through Google’s official Gemini for Students website. Applicants must verify their student status before activating the offer.

The free 12-month subscription includes access to Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, for research, explanations, writing assistance and other academic tasks. Students also receive twice the usage limits in Gemini compared with the standard offering.

The package includes 400 GB of cloud storage across Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos, allowing users to store academic documents and other files.

Additional features include study notebooks for organising lecture notes, syllabi and course materials, as well as personalised quizzes generated from uploaded learning resources.

Students can also use Gemini Live to hold real-time voice conversations about difficult topics and access interactive visualisations and simulations that explain complex concepts. The student plan also includes Gemini Omni video-generation capabilities.

These tools are intended to help students prepare for examinations, organise their coursework and improve their understanding of challenging subjects. However, the availability of individual features may vary.

The offer is open to eligible university and college students aged 18 and above who reside in participating African countries. Applicants must complete Google’s student verification process to qualify.

New users and students whose 2025 Google AI Pro trial has expired may also be eligible, subject to the current terms and eligibility requirements.

The 27 participating countries are Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Interested students can claim the offer by visiting https://gemini.google/students/ and selecting the student plan option. They must sign in to the Google account they intend to use and follow the instructions to verify their student status. The verification process may involve Google’s verification partner, SheerID.

Eligible applicants can then complete the subscription activation process. Students are advised to use the official Google website and follow the verification instructions displayed for their accounts.

According to Google’s published terms, the offer can be redeemed until December 31, 2026. Eligible students should complete the verification and activation process before the deadline.
