REA to launch RAMCO as Nigeria seeks stronger investment and sustainability in renewable energy

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) will launch the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) on August 26, 2026, in a move aimed at strengthening investment, improving asset sustainability and supporting the long-term development of Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.

REA Managing Director, Abubakar Aliyu, said RAMCO would establish a specialised platform for the professional management, optimisation and long-term sustainability of renewable energy assets across the country.

Aliyu said the initiative was developed to tackle a major challenge within Nigeria’s renewable energy industry: the need for long-term capital to maintain and expand electricity infrastructure.

He explained that Nigeria requires institutions capable of linking renewable energy infrastructure with sustained private investment, particularly because government funding alone cannot satisfy the country’s rising electricity requirements.

“The agency is set to launch RAMCO on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Abuja, heralding a new era of advancing distributed renewable energy access in Nigeria,” Aliyu said.

According to him, the country has substantial renewable energy opportunities, backed by its large population, abundant solar resources, an expanding community of renewable energy developers and the legal framework provided by the Electricity Act 2023.

Aliyu said RAMCO could connect public infrastructure to private capital, provided the company operates under clearly defined commercial and regulatory structures.

He explained that the company would broaden the sector’s focus from simply deploying renewable energy infrastructure to ensuring that existing assets remain sustainable, productive and financially viable.

Under the proposed model, mature renewable energy assets could be refinanced or their capital recycled, subject to the required commercial and regulatory arrangements.

Capital generated through those transactions could subsequently be invested in new renewable energy projects. This would create a cycle where existing infrastructure contributes to financing additional electricity expansion.

Asset maintenance, Aliyu added, would be central to keeping renewable energy projects operational over the long term.

He noted that solar panels, batteries, inverters and other components have varying operational lifespans and therefore require routine maintenance, replacement and performance monitoring.

Effective asset management, he said, must consequently extend across equipment maintenance, revenue collection, customer demand, operator performance and the overall financial condition of renewable energy projects.

The REA managing director stressed that securing long-term capital would be critical to expanding Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure because of the scale of the country’s energy requirements.

He said Nigeria’s renewable energy strategy should consequently look beyond installed capacity by ensuring that existing infrastructure continues to deliver while creating systems capable of mobilising fresh capital for additional projects.

Aliyu said RAMCO’s eventual performance would be measured by its capacity to keep renewable energy assets productive, attract private investment, rehabilitate distressed projects and recycle capital into new electrification initiatives.

The August 26 launch is expected to influence how Nigeria’s distributed renewable energy infrastructure is financed and managed as the country works to expand electricity access and reduce dependence on government budgets, sovereign borrowing and development finance.

For renewable energy developers and other industry participants, the establishment of a dedicated asset management platform could open opportunities for investment, rehabilitation of existing assets and development of commercially sustainable energy projects.
