Lagos Energy Reforms to drive facility management growth through skills, innovation, research

The International Facility Management Association (IFMA), Nigeria Chapter, has announced a broad set of initiatives designed to strengthen professional capacity, promote industry-focused research and equip facility managers to adapt to Nigeria’s changing energy environment.

The plans were unveiled during the IFMA Corporate Membership event themed, “Evaluating the Impact of New Energy Regulations on Facility Management – The Lagos State Example.” The association also reaffirmed its commitment to working more closely with government institutions and private sector stakeholders to build a stronger and more resilient facility management industry.

Among the key initiatives introduced are the establishment of an IFMA Learning and Innovation Centre, the development of a Research and Development Platform, the launch of an industry Talent Bank, and expanded collaboration through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to help address skills shortages within the sector.

Speaking at the event, IFMA Nigeria President, Sheriff Daramola, said the association is focused on building an ecosystem that provides professionals with the expertise, technology and practical competencies needed to meet the industry’s evolving demands.

According to Daramola, the proposed Learning and Innovation Centre will function as a central hub for training, certification, innovation and corporate collaboration. He added that the Talent Bank is expected to connect employers with verified professionals, improving recruitment processes while helping to tackle workforce shortages across the facility management industry.

He further explained that the planned Research and Development Platform will support the creation of practical, data-driven solutions across several areas, including energy efficiency, workplace experience, asset performance, facility management technology and financing.

Delivering the keynote address, the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, said recent electricity sector reforms in the state are opening new opportunities for facility managers to play a more strategic role in delivering sustainable, efficient and resilient infrastructure.

Ogunleye noted that the implementation of the Lagos State Electricity Law, alongside the establishment of institutions including the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), Lagos Independent System Operator (LAISO) and the Lagos State Electrification Agency (LSEA), has created the framework for a competitive electricity market that promotes investment, innovation and a more reliable energy supply.
