Kenya widens digital learning drive across public junior schools

Kenya is broadening the integration of digital technology into public school education as the government moves to modernise the sector and prepare learners for an increasingly digital and artificial intelligence-driven future.

The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, through the ICT Authority, is leading the initiative, which involves providing schools with smartboards and laptops, converting curriculum materials into digital formats and strengthening teachers’ capacity through training.

Implementation is being carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Under the first phase, the programme has been rolled out to 10,384 public Junior Schools located across Kenya’s 47 counties. A total of 62,364 teachers have also undergone training aimed at helping them incorporate digital technology effectively into classroom instruction.

The ICT Authority emphasised the importance of teachers to the success of technology-driven education, noting that educators remain at the centre of efforts to ensure digital tools translate into meaningful improvements in learning. The authority also recognised their contribution to the implementation of the programme.

Facilitation for teachers participating in the initiative has already been completed in nine counties. The government expects the outstanding facilitation activities to be concluded within September.

The programme is designed to expand technology-enabled learning, increase learners’ access to digital educational materials and develop the skills they will need to participate in an economy that is becoming increasingly digital and AI-driven.
