The Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), Kogi State chapter, has issued a warning to operators of trailers and other heavy-duty vehicles using the Barracks Road corridor to GYB Junction in Lokoja, announcing that strict enforcement of safety regulations will begin on August 31.
The state chairman of ISPON and chief consultant on Kogi State Safety Standard Regulations and Compliance, Elder Friday Makama, gave the warning during a press briefing in Lokoja.
Makama explained that ISPON, in its capacity as the state consultant on safety standards, is responsible for ensuring that companies, industries, government institutions and non-governmental organisations across Kogi State comply with established safety regulations.
According to him, the Institute regularly inspects companies, industries and government infrastructure as part of efforts to protect lives and property, while also preventing avoidable damage to public assets.
However, he raised concern over continued violations involving trailers and other heavy-duty vehicles using Barracks Road, noting that the route was not suitable for such traffic.
He said inspections conducted by the Institute showed that heavy trucks and trailers were increasingly using Barracks Road instead of House of Assembly Road, which was specifically designed to handle heavy-duty vehicles.
“Our inspection has revealed serious violations of safety standards on the Barracks Road axis. Heavy trucks and trailers are illegally using the route instead of the House of Assembly Road, which is specifically designed to accommodate such heavy-duty vehicles,” he said.
Makama said the continued use of Barracks Road by heavy-duty vehicles was accelerating the deterioration and structural damage of the road and creating significant safety risks for other road users.
He subsequently announced that ISPON would begin full enforcement of the safety regulations on August 31, warning that violations would no longer be tolerated.
“As from August 31, any heavy-duty truck or trailer found plying the Barracks Road will be arrested.
“All operators are hereby advised to strictly use the House of Assembly Road linking Crusher and GYB Junction, which is designated for such vehicles,” he warned.
The ISPON chairman also called on transport unions, haulage companies and other relevant stakeholders to immediately sensitise their members and ensure that the directive is observed.
He stressed that the enforcement was not aimed at obstructing legitimate business activities, but at protecting lives, preserving public infrastructure and preventing avoidable accidents and damage.
Makama further reaffirmed ISPON’s commitment to enforcing safety standards across Kogi State. He appealed to road users, businesses and relevant organisations to cooperate with regulatory authorities in efforts to promote a safer environment and sustainable development.
