Nigeria’s $300m energy fund targets wider renewable power access

The Africa Social Impact Summit (ASIS) has highlighted the commercial launch of Nigeria’s $300m Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Fund as a major step towards expanding reliable electricity access across the country.

Launched by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Africa50 and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), the fund aims to mobilise investment for renewable energy solutions serving underserved communities and businesses.

The initiative reinforces the message of the inaugural ASIS Global Action Forum, held in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, that Africa needs practical solutions and investments capable of delivering development results at scale.

Convened by Sterling One Foundation in partnership with the NSIA, the United Nations Population Fund, RALLY and other partners, the forum brought together representatives from government, business, finance, philanthropy, development institutions and civil society to explore innovative approaches to development financing and accelerate progress across Africa.

The DRE Fund is co-managed by the NSIA and Africa50, with SEforALL providing leadership on energy access. It will support the expansion of distributed renewable energy systems, including mini-grids and standalone solar installations, to help close electricity access gaps and strengthen economic opportunities nationwide.

Yusuf Umar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Renewables Investment Platform for Limitless Energy, launched by the NSIA, said the initiative would help address the financing challenges involved in reaching underserved populations.

“Closing Nigeria’s energy access gap requires more than recognising the scale of the challenge; it requires financing structures that can bring viable solutions to the communities and businesses that need them most.

“The US$300m Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy Fund represents an important step towards mobilising capital for distributed energy solutions at scale. Through collaboration, disciplined investment and effective implementation, we can help expand electricity access, support businesses and create opportunities for more Nigerians to participate in economic growth.”

For ASIS, the fund demonstrates the importance of translating development financing into tangible improvements in people’s lives. Reliable electricity supports several development priorities, including healthcare, education, climate action and economic inclusion.

Olapeju Ibekwe, Chief Executive Officer of Sterling One Foundation, said the initiative reflected the need to turn development discussions into practical action through partnerships and investment.

“At the Africa Social Impact Summit, we believe that the true value of development conversations lies in what they make possible beyond the room. The launch of the Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy Fund is an important example of the kind of action Africa needs: partnerships that mobilise capital, support practical solutions and respond to the needs of people and communities.

“Reliable energy can unlock opportunities for businesses, improve essential services and strengthen livelihoods. As we work to advance Africa’s development agenda, we must continue to connect commitments with investments that deliver measurable and lasting impact.”

The fund’s long-term success will depend on its ability to extend electricity access, stimulate economic activity and improve outcomes for the communities it serves as Nigeria continues to address its energy challenges. Sustained cooperation among public institutions, investors, development organisations and private-sector partners will be essential to achieving these objectives.

Through its convening platforms, ASIS continues to promote solutions to Africa’s development priorities by bringing stakeholders together, mobilising investment and encouraging collaboration across sectors. The DRE Fund illustrates how targeted financing can support practical progress for individuals and communities.

Co-convened by Sterling One Foundation and the United Nations, ASIS remains a platform for accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals through innovation, financing and partnerships.
