Google opens 2027 engineering internships for students worldwide

Google has opened applications for its Engineering and Technical Internships for 2027, giving students opportunities to work on technology projects across software engineering, hardware engineering, user experience, site reliability engineering and research.

The internships are available across multiple Google locations, with eligibility criteria, application deadlines and work-location requirements varying by position.

Current 2027 opportunities are open to students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees, while some research programmes are available to doctoral students.

Google technical interns work directly on specific projects with its teams rather than simply observing employees. Depending on the role, projects may cover software engineering, site reliability engineering, hardware engineering, data centre engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer science research, user experience, technical infrastructure, data and algorithms, and product development.

Google’s student research opportunities also include programmes for BS, MS and PhD students, while research internships are available to students in the final year of a PhD programme.

Who can apply?

Eligibility depends on the individual internship.

Many 2027 engineering positions are aimed at students enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical field.

For instance, a current Google Software Engineering/Site Reliability Engineering internship in EMEA requires applicants to be enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s programme in Computer Science or a related technical field, with experience in data structures, algorithms and programming.

Some positions are specifically targeted at students in their penultimate or final year of study.

Applicants should review the requirements for each position before submitting an application.

Can African students apply?

Yes. Google offers technical internships across different countries and regions, including the EMEA region.

However, international students are not automatically eligible for every internship. Some positions require applicants to already be studying in the relevant region, have legal authorisation to work in the internship location, or remain physically present in the specified country throughout the programme.

For example, a current EMEA Software Engineering internship requires applicants to be enrolled in a qualifying degree programme in the EMEA region and states that participants must be located in the specified country during the internship. The position does not offer immigration sponsorship.

African students should therefore filter Google’s listings by location and carefully review work-authorisation requirements before applying.

Software engineering internships

Google’s 2027 Software Engineering internships are available to students at different academic levels, depending on the location.

Current listings may seek experience with programming languages including:

  • Python
  • C
  • C++
  • Java
  • JavaScript

Applicants may also need knowledge of data structures and algorithms demonstrated through coursework, research, personal projects, internships or other practical experience.

For some roles, experience in AI/ML, distributed systems, networking, security, web development, mobile development and machine learning may also be relevant.

Hardware and engineering internships

Google also offers internships in areas including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer engineering.

A current Hardware Engineering Intern, BS/MS, Summer 2027 listing, for example, is open to students studying Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related technical discipline.

The role may involve hardware system integration, embedded systems, computer architecture, prototyping, testing, product design and technical systems.

Required application documents

Requirements vary by position, but applicants will generally need an updated:

  • CV or resume
  • Current or recent academic transcript
  • Education information
  • Expected graduation date
  • Internship availability

Several current Google technical internship listings specifically request an updated CV/resume and an official or unofficial transcript in English.

Applicants should ensure their CV clearly highlights relevant coursework, programming languages, technical projects, research, internships, open-source contributions and other practical experience where applicable.

Application deadlines

There is no single deadline for all Google Engineering and Technical Internships 2027.

Closing dates vary by position and location, and many applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Current 2027 listings include deadlines of October 9, 2026 for some US-based engineering internships and October 23, 2026 for some EMEA software engineering positions.

Students are encouraged to apply early because some positions may stop accepting applications once the recruitment process has progressed sufficiently.

How to apply

Interested students should visit Google’s official Engineering and Technical Internships page and search for available 2027 positions.

Each listing provides its own eligibility criteria, location, deadline and application instructions.
