The Federal Ministry of Education has opened applications for the Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP) 2026, a six-month programme designed to help non-professional teachers obtain formal teaching qualifications and work towards registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
Applications for the current cohort will close on September 25, 2026.
The programme is intended for individuals already teaching in Nigeria who have academic qualifications or classroom experience but have not undergone formal professional teacher training.
The ATPP offers two qualification pathways. The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is available to holders of a non-education bachelor’s degree or HND who have at least 24 months of classroom teaching experience.
The Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) is designed for OND or ND holders with a minimum of 24 months of classroom teaching experience.
Both programmes run for six months, comprising four months of hybrid study and two months of supervised teaching practice.
Eligible applicants include non-professional teachers with non-education degrees who are currently teaching, as well as HND, ND and OND holders working as teachers.
The programme also covers educators in public and non-state schools, teachers working in ECCDE, primary, secondary and TVET settings, and those involved in non-formal and alternative education. Community instructors and volunteer educators are also eligible to apply, subject to the relevant requirements.
For the PGDE pathway, candidates must possess a non-education bachelor’s degree or HND and have at least 24 months of classroom teaching experience. Applicants for the PDE pathway must hold an OND or ND and also have at least 24 months of classroom teaching experience.
The ATPP curriculum is aligned with the TRCN Professional Standards for Teachers and includes Foundations of Education, Educational Psychology, Curriculum and Pedagogy, Inclusive Education and Safeguarding, Assessment and Data Use, and Quality Assurance.
Participants will also study Digital and Blended Learning, Subject Methodology and Specialisation, Professional Knowledge and Practice, as well as Professional Values, Ethics and Conduct.
Teaching practice forms part of the programme, allowing participants to combine their academic studies with supervised classroom experience.
Upon completing the required coursework, passing teaching practice, meeting institutional assessment requirements and passing the TRCN Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE), participants can be recommended for TRCN registration in the appropriate category.
The PGDE pathway carries 40 credit units, while the PDE pathway carries 37 credit units.
Training is delivered through accredited institutions and study centres located across Nigeria. Participating institutions listed for the programme include the National Teachers’ Institute, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, University of Lagos, University of Port Harcourt, University of Ilorin, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Maiduguri, National Open University of Nigeria, MIVA Open University, and Meadow Hall College of Education.
The ATPP website states that study centres are available across the federation.
Applicants interested in the 2026 cohort are required to apply online through the official ATPP website after confirming that they satisfy the eligibility conditions for either the PGDE or PDE pathway.
The application deadline for the current cohort is September 25, 2026. The official ATPP website currently displays the deadline and states that Cohort 1 admissions screening is live.
