UK Opens 2026/27 Commonwealth Fellowship Applications for Nigerians, Scholars and Professionals

The United Kingdom has opened applications for the 2026/27 Commonwealth Fellowship Programme, providing fully funded professional and academic opportunities to eligible Nigerians and citizens of other Commonwealth countries.

Applications opened on July 28, 2026, and interested candidates have until 4pm BST on August 25, 2026, to submit their applications.

The programme is designed for eligible professionals and academics seeking opportunities to develop their expertise while contributing to development priorities aligned with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC).

Who can apply?

The 2026/27 programme is divided into two categories: the Commonwealth Professional Fellowship and the Commonwealth Academic Fellowship.

The Commonwealth Professional Fellowship is open to mid-career professionals who have at least five years of relevant full-time or equivalent part-time work experience.

The Commonwealth Academic Fellowship is intended for university academic staff who hold a PhD and are employed by a university in a Commonwealth country other than the UK.

Applicants must either be citizens of or have refugee status in an eligible Commonwealth country, with Nigeria included among the eligible countries. They must also be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.

Candidates are required to be employed by an organisation they intend to return to after completing the fellowship. They must also not have undertaken a Commonwealth Fellowship within the five years preceding the application.

What does the fellowship cover?

Successful applicants will receive a range of financial support for their fellowship in the UK.

The benefits include approved return airfare to the UK and reimbursement of the standard visa application fee.

Fellows will also receive a monthly allowance of £2,218, increasing to £2,753 for those hosted in London.

An arrival allowance of up to £1,247.09 is also available, while additional funding may be provided for approved short courses, conferences and related travel.

How to apply

Applicants are required to complete the application process through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission application portal.

The process involves completing the online Commonwealth Fellowship application form and providing details of educational qualifications and employment history.

Candidates must also upload information about relevant work experience, publications and prizes, where applicable.

At least two references are required, including one from the applicant’s current employer. This requirement does not apply to applicants who are self-employed.

Applicants must submit a personal statement along with details of their voluntary activities and leadership experience.

They are also required to provide a development impact statement explaining how their proposed fellowship aligns with one of the CSC’s six development themes and how they intend to use the knowledge gained after returning home.

A scanned copy of a passport or national identity card must also be uploaded.

Before submission, applicants should review their applications carefully and ensure they are submitted before the deadline.

What are the development themes?

Applicants must link their proposed fellowship to one of six development priorities identified by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.

These are:

  • Science and technology for development
  • Population health and health systems
  • Innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Peace, security and governance
  • Resilience and response to crises
  • Access, inclusion and opportunity

When does the fellowship start?

The Professional Fellowships are expected to last between six weeks and three months, with the programmes scheduled to run from mid-February to mid-March 2027.

Academic Fellowships will run for three months and are expected to begin in January or February 2027.

The application deadline is August 25, 2026, at 4pm BST.

Nigeria is among the eligible Commonwealth countries, meaning qualified Nigerian professionals and academics can apply for the 2026/27 Commonwealth Fellowship Programme.
