Chevening opens 2026–2027 UK scholarship applications for Nigerian aspiring leaders nationwide

Applications have opened for the 2026–2027 Chevening Scholarship, allowing eligible Nigerians and other aspiring leaders to pursue a fully funded one-year master’s degree in the United Kingdom.

The UK Government-funded scholarship programme is aimed at professionals who have demonstrated leadership potential and are seeking to advance their education, expand their professional networks and use their experience to drive positive change in their home countries.

Applications opened on August 4, 2026, and will remain open until 11:00 UTC on October 6, 2026.

What the Chevening Scholarship offers

Chevening is a fully funded scholarship programme that enables successful applicants to undertake eligible one-year master’s degree programmes at universities across the United Kingdom.

In addition to covering academic study, the scholarship provides opportunities for professional development, international networking and membership in a global community of leaders and decision-makers.

According to Chevening, the programme is intended for individuals with the passion and influence to tackle local, national or global challenges.

The scholarship places emphasis not only on academic excellence but also on leadership, professional growth and the ability to create meaningful impact after completing the programme.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must be citizens of a Chevening-eligible country or territory and must agree to return to their country of award for at least two years after completing the scholarship.

Candidates are also required to have completed an undergraduate degree that qualifies them for admission into a UK master’s programme.

A key eligibility requirement is work experience. Applicants must have accumulated at least 2,800 hours of work experience after completing their undergraduate degree, which is approximately equivalent to two years of full-time employment.

Eligible work experience includes:

  • Full-time employment
  • Part-time employment
  • Voluntary work
  • Paid internships
  • Unpaid internships

Applicants who completed their undergraduate degree after October 2024 are not eligible for the 2026–2027 scholarship cycle because they would not have enough time to meet the required work experience threshold.

Eligible courses

As part of the application process, candidates must select three eligible UK master’s degree courses.

The selected programmes must satisfy Chevening’s eligibility criteria by being:

  • Full-time programmes
  • Commencing during the autumn term
  • Leading to a master’s degree

Distance-learning, part-time and research-based programmes are not eligible.

Applicants are not required to apply to their chosen universities before submitting their Chevening application. However, successful candidates must obtain an unconditional offer from at least one of their selected courses before the specified deadline.

Application process

Applications must be completed online through the Chevening application portal.

Applicants will be required to provide:

  • Eligibility information
  • Personal and educational details
  • Employment history
  • Three course selections
  • Details of two referees
  • Responses to four essay questions covering leadership, relationship-building, course selection and future career goals

Given the competitive nature of the scholarship, prospective applicants are encouraged to begin preparing their applications early and carefully review all eligibility requirements before applying.

Key dates

  • August 4, 2026: Applications open
  • October 6, 2026: Applications close at 11:00 UTC
  • Mid-February 2027: Shortlisted candidates are expected to receive interview invitations
  • March–April 2027: Interview stage
  • Mid-June 2027: Scholarship results announced
  • September/October 2027: Successful scholars begin their studies in the United Kingdom

Why the scholarship matters

For Nigerian professionals, the Chevening Scholarship offers more than access to postgraduate education abroad.

The programme helps participants strengthen leadership capacity, expand professional networks and develop skills that can contribute to Nigeria’s growth across sectors including business, technology, education, healthcare, sustainability, public policy and social impact.

Chevening also connects scholars and alumni to a global network of professionals working on major challenges across countries and industries.

With applications now open, eligible Nigerians interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the United Kingdom are encouraged to begin preparing their submissions ahead of the October 6, 2026 deadline.

How to apply

Interested applicants can review the eligibility criteria, explore available courses and access application guidance through the official Chevening website.
