Abia LP unveils N2.8 m essay competition for students to promote new Abia vision

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has introduced a N2.8 million essay writing competition for students in secondary and tertiary institutions of Abia origin, as part of efforts to encourage youth participation in governance and development.

The announcement was made in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, by the party’s Secretary, Chucks Akamadu, during a media briefing. He disclosed that the competition will focus on the topic, “A new Abia and need for consolidation.”

Akamadu described the initiative as the first of its kind by the state chapter, explaining that it is intended to provide young people with a platform to contribute ideas that can strengthen the ongoing transformation in Abia State.

According to him, the competition is also designed to stimulate intellectual engagement while generating practical ideas and policy recommendations that could support governance and sustainable development.

He noted that the Labour Party intends to use the exercise to gather the opinions and perspectives of participants on the progress recorded under the administration of Governor Alex Otti and explore ways to sustain those achievements.

For the secondary school category (Category A), Akamadu said winners will receive cash prizes of N500,000, N300,000, and N250,000 for first, second, and third places respectively.

For the tertiary institution category (Category B), the prizes are N1,000,000 for first place, N500,000 for second place, and N250,000 for third place.

Calling for participation, Akamadu said: ‎”We are hereby calling for entries from all Abians at home and in the Diaspora and who fall under either of the categories to send in their entries on or before July 17, 2026,” he said.‎

He further explained that each submission must not exceed 1,500 words and should be sent electronically through the party’s official email address.

Akamadu also expressed the chapter’s appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for his youth development initiatives and announced that the prize presentation ceremony is scheduled for August 3, 2026.
