The Campus Reporter project of the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) is set to hold a Twitter Spaces dialogue to commemorate the 2024 International Day of Education.

Themed “Is Tertiary Education in Africa Responding to Africa’s Problems?”, the event is set to be held on Tuesday, 30 January, by 3:30 p.m., on Campus Reporter’s Twitter handle:

The Twitter Spaces will be moderated by Adesola Ikulajolu, a Broadcast journalist at BBC News and Iretomiwa Dele-Yusuff, the Project Officer of the Campus Reporter project.

The panellists are: Senior Lecturer in the Department of Adult Education at the University of Ghana, Dr. Ellen Abakah; a Sierra Leonean journalist, lecturer and gender advocate, Dr. Williette James and Founder and Executive Director of Aid for Rural Education Access Initiative AREAi, Nigeria, Gideon Olanrewaju. 

Quality education is necessary for the development of every country, hence the need for governments to pay special attention to the constantly innovating sector to develop a curriculum that can equip youths to respond to nation-specific problems.

The West African education system has been largely criticised for being outdated and inconsistent with the country’s problems. 

The Twitter Spaces will bring together education experts from Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone to discuss the importance of quality education that prepares students in West Africa to respond to region-specific problems effectively. 

The Twitter Spaces will specifically focus on Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, comparing the quality of their educational systems, highlighting successful initiatives, analyzing the areas that need improvement, and providing solutions.

The dialogue will also explore issues of inadequate resources and curriculum gaps while shedding light on how these obstacles can be surmounted for effective education. The dialogue would also explore innovative teaching methods that will help nurture the next generation of problem-solvers.
