Zoomlion Nigeria Limited has reiterated its commitment to working with the Lagos State Government to tackle growing waste management challenges through investments in modern infrastructure and environmentally sustainable solutions.

The company’s Managing Director, Mrs Habiba Abubakar, disclosed this in an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday, stating that the firm’s latest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) intervention at the Olusosun Waste Disposal Facility reflects its resolve to implement practical initiatives that provide immediate operational improvements while advancing Lagos State’s long-term waste management agenda.

She explained that the project forms part of Zoomlion Nigeria’s wider strategy to strengthen waste management systems across Nigeria’s commercial hub through sustained collaboration with the Lagos State Government and the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

“We remain committed to delivering practical solutions that create immediate impact while supporting Lagos State’s long-term waste management objectives,” Abubakar said.

As part of the intervention, the company rehabilitated approximately 1.2 kilometres of the access road within the Olusosun Waste Disposal Facility and constructed reinforced waste tipping platforms to improve operational efficiency at one of Lagos State’s busiest waste disposal sites.

The CSR project, completed within 26 days in partnership with LAWMA, is expected to significantly improve waste evacuation activities across the facility.

Abubakar noted that the intervention resolved longstanding operational constraints that had slowed waste disposal operations, resulting in extended truck queues, increased fuel consumption, vehicle breakdowns and rising operating costs for Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and waste haulage contractors.

According to her, the improved infrastructure will boost truck turnaround time, ease congestion, enhance fleet productivity and improve the overall efficiency of waste evacuation across Lagos State.

She added that the initiative complements the Lagos Waste Management Improvement Project currently being implemented by Zoomlion Nigeria to modernise waste transfer and resource recovery across the state.

Abubakar revealed that although the company initially planned to complete the project within 21 days, unforeseen challenges extended the delivery timeline to 26 days.

She credited the successful execution of the project to the commitment of the company’s engineers and project team, alongside the support provided by the Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong.

“Our team remained resolute despite the challenges and successfully delivered the project within 26 days. That determination reflects the culture of excellence that defines Zoomlion Nigeria,” she added.

The Managing Director further stated that Zoomlion Nigeria remains committed to supporting government efforts aimed at creating a cleaner and more environmentally sustainable Lagos through continued investment in modern waste management infrastructure.

Beyond the CSR intervention, she disclosed that the company is constructing two Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous III, with each facility designed to process approximately 2,500 metric tonnes of waste daily upon completion.

She also announced that the company is developing two Material Recovery Facilities to strengthen recycling efforts, improve resource recovery and reduce reliance on landfill disposal.

According to Abubakar, these projects will accelerate Lagos State’s transition towards a circular economy by promoting efficient waste handling, environmental sustainability and improved public sanitation.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, praised Zoomlion Nigeria for responding promptly after the agency requested support.

He said rehabilitating the critical access road would significantly enhance operations at the Olusosun Disposal Facility while improving waste evacuation activities across Lagos State.

“We recognised the urgent need to improve access within this critical section of the Olusosun facility, reached out to Zoomlion Nigeria, and they responded immediately.

“Their intervention will significantly improve operations, and we appreciate their commitment to supporting Lagos State,” Gbadegesin said.
