The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Anosike, has received an award recognising his contributions to meteorological development, institutional transformation and the use of weather and climate information to advance national development.
The recognition was presented during the centenary celebration of The Daily Times of Nigeria, in acknowledgement of his efforts to strengthen meteorological services and reposition NiMet as a technology-driven, responsive and service-oriented institution.
His leadership has focused on improving the Agency’s capacity to deliver reliable weather and climate intelligence that supports economic activities, protects lives and enhances national resilience.
Since President Bola Tinubu appointed him in December 2023, Professor Anosike has pursued an institutional reform programme aimed at expanding NiMet’s scientific capabilities, upgrading its operational systems and ensuring that meteorological services produce tangible benefits for the public.
Under his administration, the Agency has continued to promote the importance of weather and climate information across key economic sectors, including aviation, agriculture, disaster risk management and climate adaptation.
NiMet has also strengthened its participation in international discussions on climate resilience, early warning systems, sustainable investment and the role of scientific knowledge in driving development.
The award further draws attention to the importance of dependable meteorological information in preventing and managing disaster risks, protecting livelihoods and promoting sustainable economic growth, particularly as climate variability and change continue to present challenges.
For NiMet, the recognition reinforces its commitment to delivering timely, accurate and dependable weather and climate information to improve public safety, economic productivity and sustainable development across Nigeria.
The Agency is also broadening its responsibilities beyond traditional weather forecasting by providing practical climate intelligence to protect lives, sustain livelihoods and support informed decisions that contribute to national development.
