LAPO Microfinance Bank (LAPO MfB) has provided free eye screening and corrective glasses to employees as part of its 2026 Sustainability Week activities, reinforcing its commitment to workplace inclusion, employee wellbeing and sustainable development.
The initiative reflects the Bank’s position that sustainability must extend beyond environmental protection to include the health, welfare and productivity of its workforce, irrespective of employees’ roles or positions.
The week-long programme, held in line with World Sustainability Day, which is observed annually on October 28, was organised around the theme, “Citizen of Change: Local Roots, Global Impact.”
Activities included an environmental sustainability sensitisation visit to Ayedere Ajibola Senior High School in Ketu, Lagos, free eye examinations and corrective glasses for staff, and the introduction of the first-of-its-kind Circularity Expo within the microfinance banking subsector.
Through these engagements, LAPO MfB is advancing its contributions to six United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 3 on Good Health and Wellbeing, SDG 7 on Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13 on Climate Action, and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
One of the major highlights of the programme was the Circularity Expo 2026, which showcased innovative approaches, collaborations and business models centred on resource efficiency, recycling, reuse and responsible consumption.
The exhibition also highlighted the role financial institutions can play in helping businesses and communities embrace circular economy principles, improve resource management and develop more resilient livelihoods.
Speaking on the Bank’s sustainability agenda, its Head of Sustainability, Ngozi Nwaichi, said: “Sustainability is not just about protecting the environment; it is also about improving lives, creating opportunities and ensuring that people and communities can thrive. Our theme reflects our belief that every responsible action, whether within our workplace or in the communities we serve, contributes to a much larger global objective.”
Beyond its internal workplace programmes, LAPO MfB is expanding access to sustainable financing through its Green Clean Lending programme.
The initiative has facilitated the financing of more than 768,000 clean energy products, with over ₦21.72 billion disbursed to support the acquisition of solar home systems, solar-powered appliances, refrigerators, freezers and clean cookstoves.
These financing interventions are helping households and businesses access cleaner energy options while supporting economic activities and reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.
The Bank has also partnered with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to support the planting of 3,000 trees as part of its environmental sustainability efforts.
In another development, its collaboration with Water.org, supported by a $200,000 commitment, is targeting improved access to water and sanitation for 12,000 households and 500 small businesses across Kano and Jigawa States by December 2027.
The Bank’s activities across healthcare, clean energy financing, environmental conservation, water access and responsible consumption align with its broader commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
LAPO MfB said its sustainability strategy will continue to prioritise inclusion, responsible business practices and environmental stewardship across its operations, financing activities and community engagements.
Through these efforts, the Bank is demonstrating how locally driven initiatives can contribute to wider sustainable development objectives and create lasting impact beyond its immediate areas of operation.
