Applications are now open for the 2027 International Monetary Fund (IMF) Fund Internship Program (FIP) – Economists, offering PhD students in economics the opportunity to gain practical research experience at one of the world’s leading international financial institutions.
The 10–12-week programme will enable successful applicants to apply their economic research skills to real-world policy and operational challenges affecting the IMF’s 191 member countries. Interns will work alongside experienced IMF economists, strengthen their analytical capabilities and develop professional networks within an international environment.
The Fund Internship Program is designed to give PhD students the opportunity to contribute to individual research or project assignments at the IMF headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Throughout the internship, participants will gain hands-on experience, apply their academic knowledge to policy questions and collaborate with IMF staff. Many interns also present their research findings to staff, while some have their work published internally.
The 2027 internship is scheduled to take place from June 7 to August 27, 2027.
To be eligible for the Fund Internship Program – Economists, applicants must be within one to two years of completing a PhD in macroeconomics or a related field. They must also be enrolled as students when the internship begins and return to their academic studies afterwards.
Applicants must be under 32 years old when the internship starts in June 2027. They are also required to demonstrate excellent written and spoken English proficiency, alongside strong analytical, quantitative and computer skills.
Successful interns will gain practical research experience through individual research or project assignments addressing real-world economic and policy issues.
They will also have the opportunity to work directly with experienced IMF economists at the organisation’s headquarters, apply their academic knowledge to strengthen their economic research and quantitative capabilities, and establish professional connections with IMF staff and other professionals in an international working environment.
The programme also provides opportunities for interns to present their research findings to IMF staff, with some participants having their work published internally.
Applicants are required to complete the online application and technical questionnaire and submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV) or résumé outlining their academic qualifications and relevant experience.
They must also provide a Statement of Interest or Cover Letter explaining their motivation for applying to the IMF, as well as proof of current student status and academic performance. This can be provided through a recent university transcript or a letter from the university confirming active enrolment and recent grades.
The internship will begin on June 7, 2027, and end on August 27, 2027, with a duration of 10–12 weeks.
