Nigerians planning to travel to Canada for tourism, education, employment or family visits may now need to allow more time for their applications to be processed, following an update by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
The latest processing-time figures, posted on August 19, 2026, show increases across several temporary resident application categories for applicants from Nigeria.
Data compiled by Immigration News Canada from the IRCC processing-time tool indicates that the estimated processing time for a Canadian visitor visa from Nigeria has increased to 76 days, compared with 68 days in the previous update.
The latest figure represents an additional eight days for Nigerians submitting visitor visa applications from outside Canada.
Study permit applicants are also facing longer estimated waiting periods. The processing time has increased to nine weeks, representing a two-week rise from the previous estimate.
The estimated processing period for Nigerians applying for work permits has similarly climbed to nine weeks, also increasing by two weeks from the previous update.
Applicants seeking a Canadian Super Visa are experiencing the largest increase among the listed categories. The estimated processing time has risen to 53 days, up by 10 days compared with the previous figure.
The figures form part of IRCC’s August 19 update to its processing-time estimates. The department regularly revises the estimates according to factors including application volumes and processing capacity.
The development could affect Nigerians preparing to travel to Canada for tourism, pursue education, take up employment or visit family members, as applicants may now have to factor the longer estimated processing periods into their plans.
The latest figures are:
- Visitor visa: 76 days, an additional eight days from the previous 68 days.
- Study permit: Nine weeks, an additional two weeks.
- Work permit: Nine weeks, an additional two weeks.
- Super Visa: 53 days, an additional 10 days.
IRCC’s processing times are estimates and do not guarantee that an application will be finalised within the stated timeframe.
The department regularly updates its processing-time estimates based on prevailing application volumes and processing capacity.
