The Anambra State Government has renewed its commitment to working with the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) to enhance radiation safety standards and ensure the safe application of radioactive materials in healthcare facilities across the state.

The renewed partnership was reaffirmed during a meeting held in Awka between the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, and an NNRA delegation led by the South-East Zonal Coordinator, Mr Ekene Efienemokwu.

During the engagement, Efienemokwu said the visit was designed to strengthen cooperation with the state government while providing greater awareness of the NNRA’s statutory responsibility for regulating radioactive materials throughout their lifecycle—from importation to their use in hospitals, diagnostic centres and other licensed facilities.

He explained that the authority is mandated to ensure radioactive materials are handled and utilised in accordance with national regulations, with the aim of protecting healthcare workers, patients, the public and the environment from the harmful effects of ionising radiation.

Dr Obidike praised the NNRA for its regulatory responsibilities in advancing the safe and peaceful use of radioactive materials across Nigeria.

The commissioner also reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra State Government to maintaining close collaboration with the authority to strengthen radiation safety measures and improve healthcare delivery across the state.

He further noted that the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo is making significant investments in modern healthcare infrastructure, including the establishment of an oncology centre.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both the Anambra State Government and the NNRA reaffirmed their shared commitment to sustained collaboration aimed at improving healthcare delivery, protecting the environment and promoting the safe and peaceful use of radioactive materials in Anambra State.
