Achievers University, Owo, has announced a series of academic, administrative and infrastructure achievements recorded during the eight-month leadership of its Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amos Oyesoji Aremu, with the institution securing full accreditation for its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme and an approved admission quota of 120 students.

The accomplishments were outlined in the executive summary of Aremu’s handover report, issued ahead of the conclusion of his appointment on July 31, 2026.

Professor Aremu assumed office as Acting Vice-Chancellor on December 1, 2025, following the temporary exit of the substantive Vice-Chancellor, Professor Omolola Oladunni Irinoye. According to the report, the university maintained academic and administrative stability throughout the period despite challenges, including the discovery of a fraud case in April 2026 that was traced to the 2023/2024 academic session.

The report stated that the institution successfully completed the 2025/2026 academic session while introducing governance measures designed to strengthen internal administration.

Among the major policy initiatives approved by the Senate were the adoption of a Policy on Name Rendering and Seating Arrangements and the rescheduling of the university’s Convocation Day to October 24 to coincide with the Federal Government’s approval date for the institution’s establishment.

The university also inaugurated several strategic committees during the period, including the Joint Achievers University/Federal Medical Centre Implementation Committee.

On academic advancement, the report noted that the university revived its inaugural lecture series after the last lecture held in 2022. During Aremu’s tenure, three inaugural lectures were delivered, while new academic gowns were procured to support inaugural and public lectures across various faculties.

One of the administration’s most significant achievements was the full accreditation granted to the MBBS programme, a development expected to strengthen the College of Medicine’s contribution to medical education in Nigeria.

Beyond Medicine, the university also secured full accreditation for several other academic programmes, including Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Sociology, Criminology and Security Studies, Microbiology, and Medical Laboratory Science.

The report further highlighted initiatives aimed at improving postgraduate education, particularly through strengthened quality assurance processes for doctoral programmes. Progress was also made toward establishing Distance Education and e-learning platforms, with course materials for the Bachelor of Nursing programme already developed.

As part of efforts to improve the institution’s international profile, the university intensified activities to boost its research visibility through registration with the Times Higher Education world university ranking system.

Staff welfare and institutional development also featured prominently during the administration. New promotion guidelines and standardised curriculum vitae formats for both academic and non-teaching staff were introduced and implemented during the 2025/2026 promotion exercise.

The exercise resulted in the promotion of two academics to the rank of Reader, while five additional readership cases were declared prima facie qualified. Several academic and non-academic staff also received promotions.

According to the report, the university invested in infrastructure by upgrading ICT facilities, strengthening its security architecture and advancing environmental sustainability initiatives.

As part of its campus greening programme, 30 tree seedlings were planted at the Faculty of Technology and Engineering, while an additional 108 seedlings were planted across the university campus.

The report also noted improvements in student development through the activities of the Red Cross Society and the Nigerian Cadet Network.

Aremu credited the progress recorded during his tenure to the support of the Pro-Chancellor, Governing Council, Senate, management, staff and students, expressing confidence that he was handing over a stable, functional and forward-looking institution.
