Microsoft for Startups has opened applications for Imagine Cup 2027, a global competition designed to support early-stage startups developing technology products and services with commercial potential.
The competition offers founders an opportunity to showcase their innovations to industry experts, increase visibility among potential customers and business partners, and compete for cash prizes and Microsoft for Startups credits.
Unlike previous editions that primarily targeted student innovators, the 2027 competition is open to eligible startups across multiple industries, including healthcare, retail, financial services and cybersecurity.
The overall winner, known as the Imagine Cup Champion, will receive US$250,000 in cash and US$1 million in Microsoft for Startups credits. Applications opened on November 2, 2026, and will close on February 28, 2027.
What Imagine Cup 2027 Offers
The competition features several award categories and opportunities for participating startups.
The main prizes include:
- Imagine Cup Champion: US$250,000 in cash and US$1 million in Microsoft for Startups credits.
- Second-place finalist: US$50,000 in cash and US$350,000 in startup credits.
- Third-place finalist: US$25,000 in cash and US$350,000 in startup credits.
- Top Student Startup: US$25,000 in cash and US$250,000 in startup credits for the eligible student-led venture selected for the award.
Additional recognition opportunities are available for category winners and the top 20 startups.
Category winners will receive recognition, mentorship from Microsoft executives, promotional features and opportunities to access enterprise networks. The top 20 startups will also gain recognition and opportunities to connect with enterprise customers and the broader Microsoft ecosystem.
The three overall finalists will compete for the championship awards, while the Top Student Startup will follow a separate judging process and cannot compete for any of the three finalist prizes.
Microsoft for Startups credits are separate from the cash awards. They are governed by Microsoft’s programme terms and are intended to help eligible startups access and use its technology.
Who Can Apply?
Imagine Cup 2027 is open to eligible early-stage startups developing software-based products or services with commercial potential.
To qualify, applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Business registration: The startup must be a legally registered entity established on or after November 2, 2024.
- Funding stage: Applicants must not have raised Series C funding or any subsequent funding round.
- Age requirement: Individual entrants must be at least 18 years old.
- Team size: Each startup can register a maximum of four official team members, subject to the competition rules.
- Previous winners: Individuals or startups that previously won Imagine Cup are not eligible to participate.
- Technology requirements: Submitted solutions must satisfy the competition’s Microsoft technology and Azure requirements.
Student entrepreneurs can enter through the Student Startup category if they satisfy its additional conditions. However, student status is not compulsory for participation in the main competition.
Although the competition accepts applications globally, participation remains subject to applicable United States sanctions and export-control restrictions. Prospective applicants should review the official competition rules before submitting their entries.
Competition Categories
Startups must choose one category that best represents their products, intended customers and target markets. Only one entry is permitted per startup.
The seven available categories are:
- Developer Tools: Solutions that help developers build, test, deploy, secure, manage or scale software and digital infrastructure.
- Retail: Technologies designed to improve retail operations, customer experiences, demand forecasting, inventory management and how brands understand their customers.
- Healthcare and Life Sciences: Innovations that support healthcare delivery, clinical operations, medical research, accessibility and improved patient outcomes.
- Cybersecurity: Products that help organisations secure identities, data, applications, cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence systems.
- Financial Services: Technologies that enable financial institutions to manage risks, improve customer services, strengthen security and deliver financial products more efficiently.
- Deep Tech and Physical AI: Startups developing advanced technologies that integrate software and artificial intelligence with hardware, machines or physical systems.
- Student Startup: A cross-industry category for eligible student-led ventures developing products or technical concepts with practical commercial potential.
The selected category determines the judging panel and evaluation criteria. Applicants are therefore expected to choose the option that most closely aligns with their core product and customer base.
What Makes a Competitive Application?
Microsoft is seeking startups that can demonstrate a clearly defined customer problem, an innovative solution and a realistic strategy for commercial growth.
Applicants should be prepared to explain several aspects of their businesses, including:
- Problem: The specific challenge their product addresses and the people or organisations affected.
- Solution: How the product works and what distinguishes it from existing alternatives.
- Market opportunity: The intended customers and the potential size of the commercial market.
- Traction: Evidence of customer demand or product adoption, including sales, deployments, partnerships and customer feedback.
- Business model: How the startup intends to generate revenue and expand its operations.
- Technology: The Microsoft technologies and Azure services integrated into the solution and how they contribute to performance, security and scalability.
- Team: The experience and capabilities that position the founders and their team to develop the product and execute their growth strategy.
The judging process will assess each startup’s business profile, market opportunity, product development and technical approach, customer value, innovation and execution capacity.
Applicants are expected to support their presentations with credible evidence rather than relying solely on general claims about future business growth.
Documents and Application Requirements
Founders are advised to organise the necessary business and technical information before beginning the application.
The required materials include:
- Startup name, website, founding date, headquarters and primary markets.
- Founder and team information, including details of an authorised representative.
- A pitch deck outlining the product, business model, market opportunity and existing traction.
- A product demonstration video lasting between two and three minutes.
- An Azure architecture diagram or technical overview.
- Written responses to the application questions.
- A Microsoft for Startups account and a valid Azure Subscription ID linked to the startup and submitted solution.
The competition’s Azure requirements also specify a minimum of 10 qualifying Azure workloads, each with at least US$1 in spending, by the application deadline. Applicants should consult the latest official rules and Azure guidance to verify the applicable technical requirements.
All application materials must be submitted through the Award Force platform before the deadline. Simply saving an application without completing the submission process does not qualify as an official entry.
