Stanford opens 2027-2028 journalism fellowship with $135,000 stipend

Applications are open for the 2027-2028 John S. Knight (JSK) Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University, offering experienced journalists and professionals supporting journalism an opportunity to spend nine months exploring ideas, developing their work and engaging with a global network.

The fellowship targets intellectually curious and creatively driven professionals who want to challenge their assumptions, investigate important questions and explore new approaches to journalism.

Eligible applicants include journalists, editors, producers, photographers, audience and community engagement specialists, publishers, and professionals working in other roles that support the journalism industry.

Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience. A university degree or previous employment in a traditional newsroom is not compulsory. However, student projects and internships do not count towards the required five years of experience.

The programme welcomes applications from professionals directly involved in producing journalistic content, regardless of their specific roles. It also considers people working in operations or strategy positions within news organisations and those employed by organisations that directly support or collaborate with journalists.

Successful fellows will receive a $135,000 stipend for the nine-month programme, alongside Stanford tuition and health insurance. Those with dependents enrolled in Stanford’s health coverage will also receive a health supplement.

Additional support includes guidance on securing rental accommodation and settling into the Stanford area for fellows and their families. Participants will also benefit from individual coaching, tailored workshops, access to the global JSK alumni network, and time to explore Stanford’s academic and creative resources.

The fellowship requires participants to reside at Stanford from September through May and commit to the programme full-time. Fellows must attend weekly cohort meetings, participate in one-on-one coaching sessions every two weeks, and attend occasional events organised by JSK and Stanford University.

Participants are also expected to share their insights and reflections publicly throughout the fellowship and collaborate respectfully with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

The application deadline is December 2, 2026.

Interested applicants can find further details and apply through the official John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships website.
