Unilever Nigeria backs employees’ children with scholarships

Unilever Nigeria Plc has continued its long-standing education support initiative by awarding scholarships to children of its employees, helping them pursue secondary education while promoting academic excellence.

The scholarship programme has operated for more than 30 years and is merit-based, with eligibility limited to children of the company’s non-management employees.

Prospective beneficiaries are required to sit for a WAEC aptitude test as part of the selection process. The examination is conducted at Unilever Nigeria’s manufacturing facilities in Agbara and Oregun.

Successful applicants receive the scholarship from Junior Secondary School (JSS) and can continue to benefit through Senior Secondary School (SSS3), provided they meet the stipulated academic performance requirements.

For new applicants, the scholarship is awarded to the top 25 candidates who score at least 50 per cent in the aptitude test.

Students already benefiting from the scheme are also required to maintain specific academic standards to retain their scholarships. They must achieve an average of at least 50 per cent in their final examinations and secure a minimum of five credits, including Mathematics and English Language, at their first attempt in a recognised secondary school final examination.

Speaking about the initiative, Unilever Nigeria’s Human Relations Director, Michael Duah, said the programme demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting employees’ families while motivating young people to pursue academic excellence.

He described education as a powerful catalyst for development and said continued investment in the education of the next generation remains an important part of Unilever Nigeria’s commitment to its employees and their families.

Through the scholarship scheme, beneficiaries receive continued educational support while children of employees are given the opportunity to pursue secondary education based on academic merit.
