Kenya has launched the second phase of its Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) device rollout in Nairobi County, marking another step in the government’s efforts to expand technology-supported teaching and learning in public Junior Schools.
The Nairobi phase was inaugurated at Lenana Primary School by the Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui. He was joined by Dagoretti South MP and Chairperson of the National Assembly Committee on Communication, Information and Innovation, Hon. John Kiarie, as well as ICT Authority CEO Jessy Maruti.
The rollout is being implemented by the ICT Authority through the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP). Under Phase II, teacher laptops and interactive smartboards are being deployed to 10,382 public Junior Schools located across Kenya’s 47 counties.
Nairobi County has recorded substantial progress in the rollout, with devices already delivered to all 98 schools identified for the programme.
Installation, inspection and acceptance processes have been completed in 91 of the targeted schools. This puts the county’s rollout completion rate at 92.9 per cent.
Alongside the device deployment, the programme includes training for teachers to improve their digital capabilities and support the effective integration of technology into classroom activities.
The initiative is designed to strengthen digital learning in schools while equipping students with skills considered relevant to an increasingly technology-driven economy.
