MTN Group, IMF explore digital connectivity and finance to drive Africa’s economic growth

MTN Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are collaborating to examine how digital connectivity and financial services can accelerate economic growth and expand financial inclusion across Africa.

The strategic engagement is focused on the contribution of telecommunications infrastructure, mobile money and digital services to improving access to financial services, strengthening economic resilience and supporting regional trade.

MTN Group has continued to position digital connectivity and mobile financial services as important components of Africa’s emerging digital economy. Through investments in broadband infrastructure and mobile money platforms, the telecommunications company is expanding access to digital services for individuals and businesses across its markets.

Its digital expansion includes the deployment of 4G and 5G networks, investment in subsea cable infrastructure and the expansion of mobile financial services to populations with limited access to conventional banking.

Greater connectivity could create new opportunities for small businesses by allowing them to access digital marketplaces, interact with customers and suppliers, and participate in cross-border commerce.

Affordable and reliable internet access also remains important to digital entrepreneurship, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that rely on online platforms for marketing, payments and day-to-day business operations.

The IMF has, meanwhile, identified digitalisation as an increasingly significant element of economic development and public-sector efficiency. Digital financial services can expand access to formal financial systems while helping to reduce some of the costs associated with cash-based transactions.

For underserved communities, mobile money can provide access to payments, savings, credit and other financial services without requiring users to visit a traditional bank branch.

The collaboration also underscores the importance of policy and regulatory frameworks in advancing Africa’s digital transformation. Effective regulation can support investment in telecommunications infrastructure, encourage competition and widen access to affordable digital services.

For SMEs, narrowing the financial inclusion gap could have significant economic implications. Digital payment systems can make it easier for businesses to receive payments, manage cash flow and reach broader markets.

Digital payments can also facilitate cross-border trade by reducing transaction barriers while improving the speed and transparency of financial transactions.

As African economies continue to invest in digital infrastructure, collaboration among telecommunications companies, financial institutions, governments and international organisations could contribute to building a more connected and financially inclusive continent.

The increasing emphasis on digitalisation also reflects its growing role beyond technology, with digital infrastructure and financial services becoming increasingly relevant to economic policy, financial inclusion and long-term development.

For millions of Africans and small businesses that remain underserved by traditional financial systems, wider access to reliable connectivity and digital financial services could create new pathways into the formal economy and regional markets.
