The American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, has obtained approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce five new postgraduate programmes in law and economics beginning with the 2026/2027 academic session.

The approval follows a successful resource assessment conducted by the commission and takes effect from the 2026/2027 academic year.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday in Yola by the university’s Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, Yusuf Mohammed.

Under the approval, AUN will offer Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in Economics, alongside a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Law, Master of Laws (LLM), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law.

President of AUN, DeWayne Frazier, described the approval as another significant milestone in the institution’s graduate education journey.

According to Mr Frazier, the development reflects the continuous expansion of AUN’s School of Graduate Studies and its growing role in promoting research, scholarship and academic excellence.

He noted that the graduate school has experienced significant enrolment growth over the past three years, further strengthening the university’s research output and national influence.

Mr Frazier added that the newly approved programmes are designed to address the increasing demand for advanced education in law and economics while broadening the university’s academic portfolio and overall impact.

Also speaking, the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Bolade Agboola, said the approval of the economics programmes represents a natural progression of AUN’s undergraduate economics programme.

Mr Agboola expressed confidence that the university’s faculty and facilities would equip graduates with the skills needed to compete globally.

He stated that the programmes will admit their first set of students during the 2026/2027 academic session, creating new opportunities for advanced study, interdisciplinary research and professional development.

He further said the approval reinforces AUN’s commitment to producing ethical leaders, advancing knowledge and delivering practical solutions to national and global challenges.
