The United Nations (UN) has renewed its call for stronger financial commitments, deeper partnerships and sustained investment in people to help Africa accelerate progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The appeal was made during the Africa Social Impact Summit 2026 held in Lagos, where the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Muriel Mafico, delivered remarks on behalf of the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Ms. Wafaa Saeed.
Addressing government officials, development partners, civil society organisations and private-sector leaders at the summit, Ms. Mafico said the continent stands at a decisive point in its development journey. She stressed that conversations around financing should focus on creating greater opportunities for individuals and communities across Africa.
She said: “The wealth of a nation is not measured by what it extracts from the ground. It is measured by what it unlocks in its people, and highlights the need for bold and people-centred investments to address growing development challenges and unlock Africa’s potential.”
According to her, mobilising adequate financing, reinforcing strategic partnerships and prioritising investments in people are essential to advancing sustainable development across the continent.
Ms. Mafico further emphasised the need to ensure that every child has access to education, every young person can secure meaningful employment, every woman is empowered to realise her full potential, and every community is equipped to withstand future shocks.
She noted that achieving these objectives would require coordinated efforts among governments, development institutions, civil society organisations and the private sector as Africa works to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
