Women for Women International Nigeria seeks stronger support to end women’s poverty

Women For Women International Nigeria has renewed its call for greater collaboration to improve the welfare of women across the country, urging stakeholders to strengthen efforts aimed at reducing poverty among the female population and creating a more inclusive society.

The appeal was made during the organisation’s 25th anniversary celebration, where its Country Director, Bukola Onyishi, highlighted the challenges faced by women, particularly those affected by conflict.

Speaking at the event, Onyishi stressed the urgent need for sustained support, noting that one in three women will experience physical or sexual violence during her lifetime.

“Imagine being pregnant while fleeing conflict, imagine being a young girl managing her monthly cycle in a displacement camp, imagine being elderly or living with disability, with nowhere to turn for safety,” she said.

Reflecting on the organisation’s impact over the past 25 years, Onyishi said Women For Women International Nigeria has helped women rebuild their confidence, establish businesses, educate their children, emerge as community leaders and regain hope.

Also speaking, International Board Member Rima Salah underscored the critical role women play in promoting peace and driving positive change.

According to her, the women for peace and security agenda is a comprehensive international policy framework that recognises and addresses the unique and disproportionate impact of conflict on women and girls while promoting active participation in the peace and security process.

She encouraged participants to continue raising the standard by amplifying the voices of Nigerian women so their stories of resilience and success can be heard across the world.

Chairman of Woodhall Capital Foundation, Vavo Hunponu-Wusu, said the initiative is founded on the belief that empowering people with purpose and opportunity enables them to become drivers of transformation within their communities and beyond.

According to him, it is important to renew collective commitment to building a future where every woman has access to opportunity, every girl can dream without limitation and every partnership creates measurable and lasting impact.
