Tinubu approves up to 80% salary increase for 250,000 Nigerian armed forces personnel nationwide

President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary package for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay increases ranging from 30 per cent to 80 per cent across various ranks.

The new remuneration package, which will benefit about 250,000 military personnel, is scheduled to take effect from September 1, according to a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

Under the revised salary structure, officers above the rank of colonel—including brigadier-generals, major-generals, lieutenant-generals and generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.

Personnel from the rank of colonel to warrant officer will benefit from a 50 per cent increase, while those serving from private to staff sergeant will receive an 80 per cent salary adjustment.

The Presidency said the enhanced salary structure will increase the annual wage bill for members of the armed forces from N660 billion to N924 billion.

Commending members of the military for their dedication and sacrifice in protecting the country, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving their welfare.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.

“Our administration will continue to prioritise troops’ welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties.

“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security,” he said.

The President also reiterated his government’s resolve to continue investing in the welfare of military personnel while intensifying efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.

According to him, all stakeholders must work together to defeat security challenges, adding that the administration remains committed to deploying every available military and law enforcement resource to protect Nigerians.

“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland.

“Together we shall prevail over the enemies’ intent on destroying the fabric of our nation.”

President Tinubu has repeatedly acknowledged the courage and resilience of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces in ongoing operations against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism nationwide.
