The International Climate Protection Fellowship(Fully-funded)

Fellowship Overview
The fellowship spans 12 to 24 months in Germany and aims to facilitate groundbreaking projects in climate change mitigation, adaptation strategies, ecosystem preservation, biodiversity, and sustainable use of seas and oceans. Additionally, sustainability themes related to natural resources, resource-efficient consumption, and urban development are welcomed.

Each year, the foundation awards up to 15 International Climate Protection Fellowships to prospective leaders and up to five to postdoctoral researchers. These fellowships are generously funded through the International Climate Initiative, which falls under the purview of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

Key Features

For Prospective Leaders:

  • Monthly fellowship stipend of €2,170, €2,470, or €2,670 (depending on training and career level).
  • Individual support during the stay in Germany.
  • Financial support for family members, travel expenses, health insurance, or German language courses.
  • Three-week introductory event for networking, business and research institution visits, and cultural exposure.

For Postdoctoral Researchers:

  • Monthly fellowship stipend of €2,670.
  • Individual support during the stay in Germany.
  • Additional financial support for various aspects.
  • Participation in the three-week introductory event.

Host Institutes:

  • Monthly allowance for research costs: €800 for natural and engineering sciences, €500 for humanities and social sciences.

Criteria for Application

To be eligible for the International Climate Protection Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be citizens of non-European developing or transition countries.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to addressing climate change through academic or practical means.
  • Possess leadership skills and experience (for prospective leaders).
  • Have a strong command of English and/or German.

Eligibility Criteria

Prospective Leaders:

  • Completed the first academic degree within the last 12 years.
  • Minimum 48 months of professional experience.

Postdoctoral Researchers:

  • Completed the first academic degree within the last 12 years.
  • Completed the doctorate no more than four years before the application deadline.
  • Published in internationally recognized academic journals.

Application Process

  • Before applying, candidates must finalize the details of their research-based project with their chosen academic host. The online application requires the submission of:
  • A detailed project outline.
  • An extensive statement, including confirmation of support from the German host.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • The application deadline is February 1, 2024. Successful applicants can anticipate a confirmation email upon the completion of the application process.

Selection of Host Institutions
Applicants can choose from a wide array of potential host institutions in Germany, and the foundation has compiled a list of institutions that have previously hosted Climate Protection Fellows. Interested individuals can register and apply online by the deadline.
