The Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) has expanded access to quality education for military families through the establishment of new schools, infrastructure improvements and teacher capacity-building programmes.

The President of the association, Dr Safiyyah Shaibu, disclosed this on Wednesday during the 2026 NAOWA National Executive Meeting held in Abuja.

Reviewing achievements since assuming office as the association’s 25th president, Shaibu said NAOWA has continued to prioritise investment in education across its institutions.

According to her, the association has upgraded facilities in its schools, renovated and furnished NAOWA College, Asokoro, Abuja, and remodelled the NAOWA Modern Primary School in Jos.

She added that NAOWA has inaugurated new schools in Zaria, Badagry and at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks, Abuja.

Shaibu further disclosed that construction has commenced on primary and secondary schools at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks to provide a complete educational system for children of military personnel and neighbouring communities.

She also said the association recently organised the 2026 NAOWA 21st Century Teacher Transformation Training, equipping teachers with modern teaching techniques, digital skills and learner-centred instructional approaches.

According to Shaibu, plans are also underway to establish a NAOWA Tech Hub at Mambilla Barrack, where youths, women and members of surrounding communities will receive digital and entrepreneurial skills training.

She revealed that 394 youths have already been trained in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and fashion design through the association’s Youth Empowerment Project.

The NAOWA president also disclosed that more than 15,000 palliatives have been distributed to members, widows of fallen heroes, mosques and churches, while welfare support has been extended to elderly persons and people living with disabilities through collaboration with the Renewed Hope Initiative.

Shaibu said the association also established the Delight Bakery and Stitches and Design Centre to promote skills acquisition, job creation and income generation, with widows receiving priority access to bakery training.

Highlighting achievements in healthcare, she said the association upgraded the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Military Hospital, Ikoyi.

“The association also donated medical equipment to the Medical Reception Station of 243 Battalion, Badagry, as well as conducted medical outreach during the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration.

“The association strengthened health awareness through World Cancer Day activities and introduced a quarterly sports and fitness programme,” she said.

Shaibu further stated that NAOWA has strengthened leadership development through the Made-in-NAOWA Intentional Leadership Workshop while expanding international partnerships through engagements in the United Kingdom and participation at the African Women’s Summit in Zanzibar.

She urged members of the association to remain united and committed to its mission, stating that NAOWA would continue implementing programmes that empower military families through education, welfare and sustainable livelihoods.
