Recycling company Bottle2Meal is promoting cleaner streets and safer communities through sustainable waste management, aligning its activities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11), which focuses on inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities.
The initiative comes amid concerns about plastic waste in Nigeria. According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Nigeria, the country generates more than 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, with only a fraction recycled. The remaining waste contributes to environmental pollution and creates a growing public nuisance.
Bottle2Meal founder Adedeji Orunkoyi said large numbers of glass bottles are discarded daily across cities, adding to the volume of waste and environmental pollution.
He highlighted the opportunity to turn discarded materials into resources, asking: “What if every bottle collected became an opportunity? What if waste could be transformed into value, and that value could change lives?”
Orunkoyi described the company as a broader environmental movement rather than simply a recycling business.
“We are a movement for cleaner streets, safer communities and a future where nothing is lost to waste.”
He explained that Bottle2Meal collects discarded glass bottles, crushes them into cullet and returns the processed material to the recycling chain. The approach, he said, supports a circular economy while contributing to a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future.
The recovered cullet is used to manufacture new glass products, a process that helps reduce carbon emissions, advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and protect the environment.
Beyond recycling, Bottle2Meal incorporates social support into its operations by linking collected bottles to feeding programmes in selected communities.
“Through the Bottle2Meal programme, every bottle collected also contributes to feeding programmes in selected communities, turning sustainability into social good. In addition, through our partnership with Hangout App, we aim to identify safe outlets where consumers can purchase verified spirits and wines,” he stated.
Orunkoyi disclosed that the company had established partnerships with several international drinks businesses, including Pernod Ricard, whose brands include Martell and Jameson; Moët Hennessy; Rémy Cointreau, including Rémy Martin; and William Grant & Sons, the producer of Glenfiddich.
He added that Bottle2Meal was also working with more than 200 outlets across Lagos, Port Harcourt, Benin City and Abuja.
In addition to founding the recycling company, Orunkoyi works as an experiential marketing architect, strategic brand experience leader and live event curator.
