Ernst & Young refurbishes school laboratories to boost teaching, learning of science

Ernst & Young (EY) Nigeria commemorated its “2023 EY Gives Back Day” by refurbishing the science laboratories of Dolphin Senior High School, Sura, in Lagos.

Over 546 students are expected to benefit from the donation. The renovated laboratories, valued at several millions of naira, comprised Physics, Chemistry, and Biology which were equipped with modern science equipment, facilities, and laboratory reagents.

During the commissioning of the project, the EY Senior Manager, Talent & Project Coordinator, Ijeoma Ijere said the project was one of the corporate social responsibilities initiatives of the Accounting and Auditing Consulting Firm.

According to Ijere, this is purposely driven by the commitment to give back to society.

“As a purpose-driven organization, we are building a better working world, not for our clients alone, but also for the communities,” she said, adding that better education, especially science education where there is a gap and ensuring a friendly environment for the children are part of the critical areas the firm focuses its interventions.

Ijere stated that July 1 of every year had been set aside as the EY Gives Back Day when Ernest and Young in all its offices across the world give back to society.

She also noted that the Dolphin Senior School laboratory renovation project would not be the first intervention as the firm started the initiative in 2014 under which it refurbishes laboratories and equips them for schools.

“We work with the education district to select the schools for our intervention by asking them what they actually need and want us to do as the company’s intervention is focused on public secondary schools where there are yearning gaps and not private schools.”

She urged other corporate organizations to join hands with EY and the government to lift education in the state by making the laboratories in schools work better.
