Last week, 50 students from Adroit Private School, Ikorodu, Lagos participated in an impactful climate education and action workshop hosted by The Kira Foundation in partnership with sustainability leaders, Exousia Repurpose.
Aligned with six key Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations including Quality Education, Climate Action, and Partnerships for the Goals, this initiative taught high schoolers about the science behind the climate emergency. It equipped them with the skills to drive solutions today.
The interactive workshop discussed recent global climate commitments at COP28 while bringing the issues closer to home. Students gained first-hand experience repurposing PET bottles into useful furniture like ottomans, learning the importance of “Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle” for environmental stewardship.
Events like these are part of the Foundation’s Young Climate stewardship program which aims to mobilize 500+ youth activists across local high schools by 2024 through climate education and skill-building.
“Because climate change demands urgent unified action, and we believe today’s students have immense power to create ripple effects of positive impact”, a statement from the group read in part.
“The workshop opened my eyes to how much waste we create and how we can give bottles and containers new life,” one of the participating students, Tawakalt exclaimed.
“I am excited to have learned this, God bless you ma!”. she said.
The Foundation is committed to equipping young generations with knowledge and ways to tackle today’s most pressing issues, so they can create communities resilient to climate impacts and catalyze large-scale change. This is just the start of a long-term youth mobilization movement for systems-level transformation.
